Malkow Lookout – A short climb to an old forestry lookout site close to Smithers. This trail goes through 3 private properties. Use the foot gates and close the gates behind you. The trail first crosses a large farm, then heads into the forest after the next gate. It climbs up 500ft and the crosses a farm road. Follow the road to another gate and then climb up the last hill to the communication tower and picnic table on top. an easy trail with a bit of a incline at the end, takes about 1 hour one way. Take highway 16 east and turn left after the Bulkley River Bridge onto the Old Babine Lake Road. After 4.7 km turn right on McCabe Road and follow it for 2.5 km look for a sign for the "Logpile Lodge" Parking is on the left hand side the gate is the start of the trail please close gate behind you.
Crater Lake Hike- Take the Hudson Bay Mountain Ski Hill road all the way to the top and drive to the end of the road where summer parking is available at the base of the Prairie T-bar driving distance is about 22 km. Walk uphill and watch for the trail markings for the Prairie Trail follow the trail up to Crater Lake. From Crater Lake you can hike up to the ridge line south to the peak of Hudson Bay Mountain, where you can spot Mountain goats or just marvel at the beauty of the surrounding valleys.
Smithers Perimeter Trail – a scenic community trail linking neighborhoods, streets, rivers and nature parks together. The gravel, earthy (sometimes paved) footpath is 13 Kilometres long and follows the Bulkley River, Chicken Creek and Kathlyn Creek much of the way. Start the trail from Hudson Bay Lodge, just behind and to the left of Canadian Tire.
Driftwood Canyon Provincial Park – is a step back in time providing an opportunity to discover ancient fossils and explore along trails once covered in massive sheets of glacier ice. The canyon park includes an interpretive hiking/walking trail following the shores of Dawson Creek. The 300 metre hard-packed gravel trail, travels over a foot bridge, to a creekside observation point where one can explore the rivers edge looking for fossil remnants. It seems the most common fossil finds embedded in the rock are redwood trees, alder leaves and insects. PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE ANY FOSSILS FROM PARK. Travel east on Hwy 16 out of Smithers, British Columbia and turn left onto Old Babine Lake Road. Continue traveling along the Old Babine Lake Road until Telkwa High Road were you turn left. Follow the signs to Driftwood Canyon Provincial Park .
Twin Falls – a must see natural attraction that all should make an effort to visit a 15 minute drive and a 5 minute walk takes you to a massive rock head wall in which the melt water from the glacier plunges over, creating twin water falls cascading over rock bluffs and crashing to the ground. The hiking trail follows a wide gravel footpath from the parking lot to a wooden lookout platform. The footpath follows a ridge above a tumbling creek created by the run off water from the waterfalls. The trail, although short, is uphill and can take anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes to reach the platform. Take Highway 16 west of Smithers for about 4 kilometres and follow the signs to "Glacier Gulch and Twin Falls".
Lake Kathlyn Beach Park – The lake is surrounded by trees, backed by mountains and situated in a rural neighbourhood and is a perfect spot for swimming, non-motorized boating and fishing. The park area enjoys a small sandy beach and a larger grassy field. There are picnic tables in the sun and in the shade. Sitting on the edge of the grassy field are wooden viewing benches so to relax and enjoy the water views. Tucked away in the back of the park are the change rooms and outhouses. Follow the signs to "Glacier Gulch and Twin Falls". Travel Highway 16 north of Smithers, British Columbia, Canada for about 4 kilometres and take a left from Hwy 16 onto Lake Kathlyn Road. Continue driving turn right on Bench Road. The recreation site and parking lot is ahead.
Round Lake – This small scenic lake is located close to to the Smithers-Telkwa area and offers good swimming, boating and fishing. There is a historic log building located at the north end of the lake - the old Round Lake Hall. Drive east of Telkwa on highway 16 to Round Lake road about 7km away. Drive this road about 3km to the camping area, boat launch and Round Lake Hall on the lake.
